California (AB 888) - CalChiro leadership has been working hard to make sure we are successful at passing important legislation this year. Our bill, AB 888 (Low), has unanimously cleared both the Assembly Business & Professions Committee (17-0) and Assembly Health Committee (15-0) and will be heard by the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
“Providers will be required to offer a referral to evidence-based nonpharmacological treatments (i.e. chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, etc).”
For years, legislators have advised that positive outcomes are more likely when professions stand united on key issues. AB 888 does several things to ensure patients are well informed of their options before an opioid is prescribed:
- Patients will be required to give verbal and written informed consent before a prescription is written where they acknowledge they understand the risks associated with opioids.
- Providers will be required to offer a referral to evidence-based nonpharmacological treatments (i.e. chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, etc).
- Requires the state to consider including coverage of evidenced-based nonpharmacological care during the next update of the state’s essential health benefits benchmark, which has been recommended by recent research looking into evidenced-based care for pain and insurance coverage.
How can we ensure the success of this important piece of legislation?
We need you! Your voice carries louder when it is met with thousands of others all wanting the same thing; better and safer options for patients.
